The Institute

The ILaUP represents a coming-together of the diverse disciplines of its research groups in order to maintain, develop and design environmental conditions, landscapes and open spaces in urban and rural areas. Using methods of planning and design, the aim of the Institute’s research is to ensure a long-term high quality of life and environment for local inhabitants. In this way, interconnected questions across all scales, from single objects to the global scale, can be addressed. In doing so, the relevant social framework conditions are also considered. The importance of these issues will only increase considering the current and ongoing social and environmental shifts, such as demographic change and migration, digitalization, globalization, climate change, and urbanization. With this in mind, the aim of the Institute is to contribute to a sustainable, environmentally-sound development of land use by:

  1. Training highly qualified landscape architects and environmental and landscape planners
  2. Conducting research and offering political consulting

The Institute is comprised of ten research groups, four of which are associated with Landscape Architecture and four of which are associated with Environmental Planning. In addition, there are two special professorships that are concerned with economic and political questions relating to climate change and a sustainable urban economy. This diversity of expertise allows the Institute to address forward-looking complex social questions in the context of human-environment issues through a scientific and design approach. The research groups of the ILaUP work together with the neighbouring institutes of Faculty VI, the research groups of other faculties, and particularly with partners from the national and international field.
